Dichas afirmaciones reconocen que el cobre, latón y el bronce son capaces de destruir bacterias dañinas y potencialmente mortíferas. Así, el metal rojo se convierte en el primer material de superficie sólida que recibe este tipo de registro, el cual es respaldado por amplias pruebas científicas de eficacia antimicróbicas. El uso de aleaciones de cobre para superficies de contacto, como un suplemento para evitar la contaminación cruzada, tendrá implicaciones de largo alcance para el uso de este metal. Tanto es así que incluso una empresa minera chilena, ha decido hace poco dedicarse a la fabricación de diversos productos que contendrán cobre, que incluyen hasta calcetines, para diversas enfermedades asociadas a la piel, reumatismo, artritis y hasta el estrés. Por eso usar pulseras de cobre ha sido un remedio popular histórico para el alivio de los dolores de huesos. Hace ya un par de años que Graham Jackson, de la Universidad de Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica, sugirió que el cobre tiene características anti-inflamatorias y que se puede utilizar para tratar esta afección. Por otro lado, un estudio realizado en el Hospital Selly Oak de Birmingham, demostró que las superficies con materiales que contienen cobre eliminan un amplio rango de potenciales y dañinos microorganismos, reduciendo significativamente el número de patógenos que pueden entrar en contacto con pacientes, visitantes o el equipo humano que trabaja allíLa investigación concluyó que los implementos elaborados con cobre tienen sobre un 95% menos de microorganismos, comparado con los mismos implementos elaborados con materiales estándar tales como el acero inoxidable.
